Birth of The Endless Summer "Ecoboard" Short Film

In this short and micro doc series, we set out to tell a story around a sustainable surfboard, an EcoBoard certified by the non-profit Sustainable Surf. The project would also celebrate the iconic 'The Endless Summer' film and be tied in to the release of our Emmy-nominated 'Birth of The Endless Summer' feature documentary

The build created a natural beginning, middle and end, but it was the story’s tie to a movement in sustainable surfboard-making that would give it resonance and meaning over time. Master hand shaper, Joshua Martin of Martin Shapes, headed up the process. No one better than the son of the most prolific surfboard shaper of all time, Terry Martin, of Hobie Surfboards fame. Josh enlisted the support from the legend, his uncle, Mickey Munoz, and also Tyler Warren of Tyler Warren Surfboards in the design.

Josh said this about this special EcoBoard project, utilizing historical artifacts from Bruce Brown Films, LLC’sThe Endless Summer to tie into the release of our ‘Birth of the Endless Summer’ film. The board also utilized upcycled foam blocks from shipping containers and 40% plant-based resins:

“This build with Sustainable Surf celebrates the stoke surfers and board builders had back in the 50’s and 60’s. Such a great documentary on how @brucebrownfilms iconic The Endless Summer came about."
